This lovely dentist presented for replacement of an old failed amalgam restoration with recurrent caries.
Amalgams as a general rule induce crack formation due to an incompatible coefficient of thermal expansion. Sometimes, the apical extent of these stretch beyond the gingival margin and one has no choice but to abort at the level at which DME is possible. This restoration neutralized the dark, stained dentin via a few layers:
1) Microlayers with Herculite Ultra flowable A2
2) Microlayers with Herculite Ultra flowable XL2
3) Minilayers with Ever-X Flow Dentin (GC)
4) Occlusal lobing using Kerr Simplishade Medium.
