Our cosmetic dentist, Clarence Tam, HBSC, DDS, AAACD, FIADFE, was recently interviewed on nationwide talk radio show Newstalk ZB! Speaking to the show’s hosts, Dr Tam parses through the wide range of over-the-counter whitening options available and why certain whitening pastes may not lead to a noticeable improvement in one’s tooth shade. While whitening pastes can work, Dr Tam highlights the fact that discoloration often penetrates deeper than superficial stains and resides on the inside of the tooth. She explains that the colorless enamel typically begins to thin into adulthood, often making what’s underneath the enamel—the yellow-orange hue of the dentin—show through more clearly. “The problem with whitening pastes is that if you’re using an incorrect technique, you’re thinning the enamel even more and actually making the yellow-orange color more visible,” Dr Tam states.
Dr Tam recommends a proper teeth whitening protocol that doesn’t just abrade the enamel, but works to treat the deeper portion of the tooth. She also demystifies the “charcoal teeth whitening” fad, explaining that charcoal is typically not in the mouth long enough to have a strong, healthy whitening effect. In trying to whiten your teeth at home while being mindful of wearing down your enamel, Dr Tam recommends googling the Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) value of a product and staying within the safe levels of 70 or lower.
