Old composite restorations don’t always need to be removed in their entirety. In this case where one is dovetailing into the existing restoration, the margin is always bevelled before the surface treated with micro air abrasion using 27 micron aluminum oxide). The surface is then subjected to a total etch protocol, followed by silane coupling agent (G-MultiPrimer, GC) before an MD(T)P and MDP containing bond (G-Premio Bond), followed by the layered restoration itself.
In this case, the restoration blends acceptably, but not in all cases. A 50:50 ratio of A2:A3 is the secret behind GC Essentia U and works nicely for approximately 85% of cases in my hands.
